What Is Ferromanganese?
Ferromanganese is a ferroalloy produced from manganese ore, iron-containing materials, and carbon reductants through high-temperature smelting. The alloy mainly consists of manganese and iron, with controlled levels of carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur.
Manganese in ferromanganese improves steel strength, hardness, and wear resistance. Steel producers also use ferromanganese as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer during steelmaking to improve molten steel quality.

Ferromanganese Manufacturing Process
The ferromanganese manufacturing process mainly includes raw material preparation, furnace smelting, refining, and product processing.
Raw Material Preparation
Manganese ore is first crushed, screened, and prepared according to furnace requirements. Suitable particle size improves material distribution and furnace permeability.
After preparation, manganese ore, coke, and flux materials are mixed according to the target alloy grade and charged into the furnace.
Smelting Process in Submerged Arc Furnace
Modern ferromanganese production mainly uses submerged arc furnaces (SAF). The furnace generates high temperatures through electric arcs, creating suitable conditions for manganese oxide reduction.
During smelting, manganese oxides react with carbon:
MnO + C → Mn + CO
The reduced manganese combines with iron to form ferromanganese alloy. Silicon and other elements are controlled through furnace operation and slag composition adjustment.
The molten alloy is separated from slag after reduction. Effective slag management improves manganese recovery and maintains stable production.
Refining and Product Processing
After tapping from the furnace, molten ferromanganese is tested for chemical composition. Manganese, carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur levels are adjusted according to customer specifications.
The finished alloy is cast into blocks and processed into different sizes, including lump and crushed materials, for steelmaking applications.
Types of Ferromanganese Alloys
Ferromanganese grades are mainly divided according to carbon content. Steel producers choose suitable grades based on carbon control requirements and final steel performance.
High Carbon Ferromanganese
High carbon ferromanganese contains higher carbon content and is commonly used in standard steel production.
The alloy provides an economical manganese source for carbon steel, construction steel, and general alloy steel production.
Medium Carbon Ferromanganese
Medium carbon ferromanganese offers a balance between manganese addition and carbon control.
The grade is suitable for alloy steel production where lower carbon input is required compared with high carbon ferromanganese.
Low Carbon Ferromanganese
Low carbon ferromanganese contains reduced carbon levels and is mainly used for stainless steel, low-carbon alloy steel, and specialty steel production.
The lower carbon content allows steelmakers to achieve accurate chemical composition during refining.
How to Choose a Reliable Ferromanganese Supplier?
A reliable ferromanganese supplier should provide stable production capacity, consistent quality, and professional technical support.
Production Capacity
Manufacturers with stable output capacity can support long-term supply contracts and reduce risks caused by market fluctuations.
Quality Control
Chemical composition testing is essential for ferroalloy products. Professional suppliers should provide inspection reports covering manganese, carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur content.
Customized Alloy Solutions
Different steel grades require different manganese and carbon levels. Experienced manufacturers can supply customized ferromanganese grades according to customer requirements.
Export Experience
International buyers should consider supplier experience in export documentation, packaging standards, and global logistics management.
