Aluminum Oxide Uses
- Refractory Materials: Thanks to its high melting point, high hardness, and good chemical stability, alumina is widely used in refractory materials. It is used to make refractory bricks, crucibles, etc., which are applied in high-temperature furnaces and kilns in industries such as steel and ceramics.
- Abrasives: Its high hardness makes it an excellent abrasive material. It can be used to grind and polish metals, glasses, ceramics, etc. Common products include alumina sandpaper and grinding wheels.
- Ceramics: Alumina is an important raw material in ceramic production. It can improve the hardness, strength, wear resistance, and high-temperature resistance of ceramics. It is used to manufacture various types of ceramics, including advanced technical ceramics and household ceramics.
Aluminium Oxide Production
- Bayer Process: This is one of the main methods for industrial production of alumina, especially suitable for treating high-grade bauxite (the main component of which is alumina, along with impurities such as iron oxide and silicon dioxide). The process mainly includes steps such as dissolution, decomposition, and calcination. First, the bauxite is dissolved in a sodium hydroxide solution under high temperature and high pressure to obtain a sodium aluminate solution. Then, through operations such as cooling and decomposition, aluminum hydroxide is precipitated. Finally, alumina is obtained by calcining the aluminum hydroxide.
- Sintering Process: Another method for treating bauxite, which is more applicable to low-grade bauxite. In this process, the bauxite is mixed with limestone and soda ash and then sintered at high temperature. This causes the alumina in the bauxite to be converted into soluble compounds such as sodium aluminate. Subsequently, alumina is obtained through a series of subsequent treatments.
Other Methods: There are also some laboratory-preferred preparation methods such as hydrolysis and alkoxide hydrolysis. These methods can be used to prepare high-purity and specially-performing alumina, but they are generally not suitable for large-scale industrial production.
