What is Silico Manganese?
Silico manganese, also known as ferro silico manganese, is an alloy composed of manganese, silicon, iron, and a small amount of carbon and other impurities. Silicon manganese alloy is a composite deoxidizer commonly used in steelmaking. Silico manganese alloy can be smelted by continuous operation in large, medium, and small submerged arc furnaces.

Silicon Manganese Used in Steel Industry
Silicon Manganese is mainly used as a deoxidizer and an alloying agent in steelmaking to eliminate oxygen and sulfur in molten steel and improve the quality and performance of steel.
Ferro silicon manganese is used as a deoxidizer. In steelmaking, oxygen blowing is used to decarbonize molten iron and remove harmful impurities such as phosphorus and sulfur. This process will increase the oxygen content in molten steel, and excessive oxygen content will reduce the mechanical properties of steel. Add some elements that have a stronger affinity with oxygen than iron, and whose oxides are easily discharged from the molten steel in the form of slag, to remove the oxygen in the molten steel. This process is called deoxidation.
The elements of silicon and manganese in silicomanganese alloy have a strong affinity with oxygen. When ferro silico manganese alloy is used in steelmaking, the melting point of the deoxygenation products MnSiO3 and MnSiO4 are 1270℃ and 1327℃ respectively, which have the advantages of low melting point, large particles, easy floating, and good deoxygenation effect.
Silicon can significantly improve the elasticity and magnetic conductivity of steel, so silicon alloy is mainly used in the smelting of structural steel, tool steel, spring steel, and transformer silicon steel. General steel contains 0.15%-0.35% silicon, structural steel contains 0.40%-1.75% silicon, tool steel contains 0.30%-1.80% silicon, spring steel contains 0.40%-2.80% silicon, stainless acid-resistant steel contains 3.40%-4.00% silicon, heat-resistant steel contains 2%-3% silicon, 2%-3% silicon or higher in silicon steel.
Manganese can reduce the brittleness of steel, improve the thermal properties of steel, and increase the strength, hardness, and abrasion resistance of steel. “No manganese, no steel,” the steel industry consumes more than 90%of its manganese production. Manganese is an indispensable functional basic raw material for the production of high-quality steel. In the process of steel making, it can remove impurities such as sulfur and oxygen, and improve the physical properties of steel by improving its strength, hardness, and abrasion resistance. At present, no other element can replace manganese in the process of steel production.

Silico Manganese Used in Other Industrial Fields
In modern industry, ferro silicon manganese is used in various fields. The steelmaking industry consumes 90-95% of the silicon-manganese alloy. It is mainly used as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer in the process of iron and steel making. The remaining 5-10% of silicomanganese is used in other industrial fields, such as the chemical industry (manufacturing various manganese-containing salts), light industry (used in batteries, matches, printing paint, soap making, etc.), building materials industry (colorants and fading agents for glass and ceramics), defense industry, electronics industry, environmental protection, agriculture, and animal husbandry, etc.
